BOSTON - Jillian Camarena won her fourth straight women's shot
put title in the AT&T USA Indoor Track & Field Championships,
taking the lead at 59 feet, 5 inches on her last attempt Saturday at
the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.
"Wow. It took me quite a while to get things together today," Camarena said. "I finally nailed one on my last throw."
The
meet began a few hours late due to a storm in the Northeast that caused
travel problems for many athletes. Christin Wurth-Thomas, the women's
leader in the Visa Championship points race, easily won the 1,500
meters in 4 minutes, 14.21 seconds.
Brad Walker topped a tough field to win the pole vault at 18-8 1/4.
"I
was pleased with the way I competed today," Walker said. "For some
reason, it's tough to get a really good mark here. Not sure why. But
I'll take the win."
Many of the United States' top track and
field athletes are not competing because it's an Olympic year.
Heptathlete Hyleas Fountain won the women's long jump in 20-11 1/4;
Shameka Marshall had the same distance, but Fountain's second-best jump
was longer.
"This was a good strength-building effort for me
today, taking all the jumps plus the warm-ups," said Fountain, who will
now concentrate on the heptathlon with an eye toward the Olympic Trials
in June.
